A meta-analysis of the relationship between ageing and occupational safety and health
Existing studies show contradictory evidence on the relationship between ageing and occupational safety and health (OSH). The present study presents a systematic review of international research on age-related occupational accident risks for the last 30?years using meta-analysis technique. A summary of odds ratios on occupational risk incidence of older workers versus younger workers were grouped by outcome of occupational accidents. Potential moderators that could influence the relationship of ageing and OSH were analysed. Results showed that older workers are more vulnerable than younger workers...
Serious Injury and Fatality Prevention: Perspectives and Practices
In the past twenty years, the US has seen gains in workplace safety, particularly regarding total recordable incident rate (TRIR). This reduction in workplace injuries should not be overshadowed by another more disturbing trend, namely that the number of life-altering injuries and fatal incidents has been on a much slower decline, and in fact has increased for the past three years. The next step in the journey to safety excellence, and one that Institute companies are currently pursuing, is the elimination of serious injuries and life-altering events. This paper summarizes the current state of...
Heat Blamed for Death of Massachusetts Postal Worker
Working outside during this recent heat wave isn’t just uncomfortable for workers. For one mail carrier, heat and humidity were deadly. Just days after Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels, the National Weather Service’s Director Dr. Louis Uccellini and television and radio meteorologists across the country held a teleconference to discuss the danger of heat to workers and provide life-saving information to share with outdoor workers in their communities, a U.S. Postal Service worker in Medford, Mass., collapsed and died during his mail...
The Cooler Solution
The dangers of the quartz halogen work light are well known: They can heat up to more than 570 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to ignite paper and wood. The 500W quartz halogen portable work light is everywhere, and why not? They are cheap, easily moved, and they put out a lot of light to help you work in an area. And while they come in a couple of different styles (on tripods, floor stands, or magnet mounts), at their core they are all the same: dangerous tools that harm workers, start fires, and set off explosions. In our experience working with contractors, electricians, and plant workers, we...
Arena Rigger fails to clip-in and falls 100 feet
Friday, April 5, 2013 - San Antonio. Texas. A high steel rigger fell to his death at the AT&T Center Arena while striking a show at 2:00 AM. Witnesses said he had detached himself from the fall safety line while repositioning himself and lost his footing while moving around a beam. A late load-out can be dangerous as fatigue can play a factor in clarity of thought and situational awareness. LED Screen Falls Injuring Three at Miami Ultra Music Festival
Thursday, March 14, 2013 - Workers setting-up modular LED display screens for the annual Miami Ultra Music Festival were trapped under screen components that fell about 30 feet (10m) from the overhead trusses. Fortunately, Fire and Rescue teams were on the festival site preparing for the two-weekend event that runs over Spring Break. They were able to respond immediately and free the trapped workers. The workers were transported to local hospitals where two were checked and found to have only minor injuries, and one worker remains hospitalized with two broken legs. The incident occurred just prior...
Allergies professionnelles.
Association between heat stress and occupational injury among Thai workers
Global warming will increase heat stress at home and at work. Few studies have addressed the health consequences in tropical low and middle income settings such as Thailand. We report on the association between heat stress and workplace injury among workers enrolled in the large national Thai Cohort Study in 2005 (N=58,495). We used logistic regression to relate heat stress and occupational injury separately for males and females, adjusting for covariate effects of age, income, education, alcohol, smoking, Body Mass Index, job location, job type, sleeping hours, existing illness, and having to...
