Z412-17 - Office ergonomics - An application standard for workplace ergonomics
This is the third edition of CSA Z412, Office ergonomics — An application standard for workplace ergonomics. It supersedes previous editions published as guidelines in 2000 and 1989 under the title Guideline on Office Ergonomics. The present edition includes updates to reflect new technology and work practices, and is now presented in the form of a standard rather than a guideline. The objective of this Standard is to apply ergonomics to enhance user health, safety, and well-being and to optimize system performance in order to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses or to reduce the severity...
Carpal tunnel syndrome and manual work
The OCTOPUS cohort, results of a ten-year longitudinal study This large longitudinal cohort study provides a prospective validation of the ACGIH TLV® method for the assessment of biomechanical exposures at work. It confirmed that “forceful hand exertions” more than “any exertion” significantly increase the risk of CTS. This study suggests that the current limits (AL and TLV) might not be sufficiently protective for some workers.
A frequency–duty cycle equation for the ACGIH hand activity level
A new equation for predicting the hand activity level (HAL) used in the American Conference for Government Industrial Hygienists threshold limit value (TLV) was based on exertion frequency (F) and percentage duty cycle (D). The TLV includes a table for estimating HAL from F and D originating from data in Latko et al. (Latko WA, Armstrong TJ, Foulke JA, Herrin GD, Rabourn RA, Ulin SS, Development and evaluation of an observational method for assessing repetition in hand tasks. American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal, 58(4):278–285, 1997) and post hoc adjustments that include extrapolations...
Clinical guidelines for occupational lifting in pregnancy
Evidence summary and provisional recommendations Empirically based lifting criteria established by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to reduce the risk of overexertion injuries in the general US working population were evaluated for application to pregnant workers. This report proposes criteria to guide decisions by medical providers about permissible weights for lifting tasks performed at work over the course of an uncomplicated pregnancy. Our evaluation included an extensive review of the literature linking occupational lifting to maternal and fetal health. Although...
Validation of the ACGIH TLV for hand activity level in the OCTOPUS cohort: a two-year longitudinal study of carpal tunnel syndrome
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the risk of musculoskeletal disorders to the hand-wrist system. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) proposed threshold limit values (TLV©) based on hand activity level (HAL) and normalized peak force (PF). We validated ACGIH TLV© in OCTOPUS, a large cohort study on carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Conclusions We found a dose–response relationship between ACGIH TLV© classification and risk of CTS. The increased risk observed for workers exposed between AL and TLV suggests that the current AL and TLV might...
Z1004-12 - Workplace ergonomics - A management and implementation standard
This is the first edition of CSA Z1004, Workplace ergonomics - A management and implementation Standard. This Standard sets out requirements and provides guidance for the systematic application of ergonomics to the development, design, use, management, and improvement of work systems through the implementation of an Ergonomics Process. The objective of this Standard is to enable an organization to enhance worker health, safety, and well-being and optimize system performance to prevent occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities and/or reduce the severity of harm related to occupational activities...
Source : http://www...
