Systems thinking applied to safety during manual handling tasks in the transport and storage industry
Injuries resulting from manual handling tasks represent an on-going problem for the transport and storage industry. This article describes an application of a systems theory-based approach, Rasmussen's (1997. Safety Science 27, 183), risk management framework, to the analysis of the factors influencing safety during manual handling activities in a freight handling organisation. Observations of manual handling activities, cognitive decision method interviews with workers (n=27) and interviews with managers (n=35) were used to gather information about three manual handling activities. Practical Demonstrations of Ergonomic Principles
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) often involve the back, wrist, elbow, and/or shoulder, and occur when workers are exposed over time to MSD risk factors, such as awkward postures, forceful exertions, or repetitive motions. These exposures sometimes occur due to poorly designed workstations, tasks, and/or hand tools [Chaffin et al. 2006; Sanders and McCormick 1993; Silverstein et al. 1996, 1997]. Workers must understand the nature of MSD risk factors and how to avoid exposure to them. In a classroom setting, trainers may discuss ergonomic principles and show examples of MSD risk factors with photographs...
Manual Handling Risks Grab Irish Authority's Attention
A new guidance document published by the Health and Safety Authority recommends ways to prevent back injuries and strains caused by handling heavy loads or lifting loads to an unsafe height. Ireland's Health and Safety Authority has posted a guidance document to help retail establishments prevent back injuries and strains that could result from manual handling of pallets, heavy boxes, and bulky consumer products at point of purchase, such as cases of bottled water. The agency noted that some work at retail establishments may involve a significant amount of physical activity, which can be hazardous...
