A multi-criteria ergonomic and performance methodology for evaluating alternatives in “manuable” material handling
The objectives of this study were: 1) to develop an efficient multi-criteria approach for choosing the optimal alternative for “manuable” material handling, and 2) to apply the multi-criteria approach to a case study. In this paper, the authors use the single-word term “manuable” to refer to the definition “can be performed manually”. The case study results indicated that the use of the manipulator tested in this work may be preferable to manual material handling in situations in which the lifted weight is large (61% vs. 39%) as well as those situations in which...

Prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in workers: classification and health surveillance
The underlying purpose of this commentary and position paper is to achieve evidence-based recommendations on prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Such prevention can take different forms (primary, secondary and tertiary), occur at different levels (i.e. in a clinical setting, at the workplace, at national level) and involve several types of activities. Members of the Scientific Committee (SC) on MSDs of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) and other interested scientists and members of the public recently discussed the scientific and clinical future...

Development of an assessment tool for repetitive tasks of the upper limbs
The prevention, control and management of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) are a priority for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and one of the key ways of improving occupational health in Great Britain. Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Local Authority (LA) Inspectors play an important role in preventing WRMSD. As well as enforcing health and safety law, they provide advice on risk factors and control measures on a range of health and safety issues. To support this work, assessment tools are required that offer an intuitive and relatively quick process to screen workplaces...
