2018 Report on Work Fatality and Injury Rates in Canada
Canadian workers compensation boards reported that 904 workers died due to work-related causes in 2016. This report provides a jurisdictional comparison of work-related fatality rates in Canada between 2011 to 2016 using data from the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC). A comparison of fatality rates is important for identifying trends over time both within and between provinces and territories. Job-related fatalities are classified as injury (e.g., death due to job-related electrocution) or occupational disease related (e.g., death from mesothelioma due to work-related...
A combined approach for the analysis of large occupational accident databases to support accident-prevention decision making
Occupational accidents are commonly collected in large databases by National Workers Compensation Authorities and companies' safety and prevention teams. The analysis of the data can be difficult because the database elements are characterized by many parameters, which are not of a numerical nature. Data mining techniques could represent an efficient tool for the identification of useful information in large databases. In 2011, a two-level clustering method, made of SOM and numerical clustering, obtained positive results in identifying critical accident dynamics. The present research proceeds...

Struck-by Injuries and Prevention in the Construction Industry
Struck-by hazards are a leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in construction, and have been defined as one of the Focus Four hazards identified by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (the other hazards are falls, caught-in-between, and electrocution; OSHA 2011). Struckby injuries can occur in many different ways. To prevent construction workers from struck-by injuries, specific hazards and working environments should be taken into account for safety and health intervention programs. This Quarterly Data Report includes data on deaths and injuries from being struck...

An international comparison of the cost of work-related accidents and illnesses
The economic advantages of occupational safety and health have never been more apparent. New estimates from an international project show that work-related accidents and illnesses cost the EU at least EUR 476 billion every year. The cost of work-related cancers alone amounts to EUR 119.5 billion. The project results were presented at the XXI World Congress on Safety and Health at Work in Singapore in September and are available on the EU-OSHA website as an interactive data visualisation. Fatal injuries arising from accidents at work in Great Britain
Headline results 2016/17 This report provides headline numbers on workplace fatal injuries that were reported to enforcing authorities in 2016/17. It includes both fatal injuries to workers and to members of the public. The 2016/17 figures are currently provisional, and marked as ‘p' and will be finalised in July 2018 to take account of any necessary adjustments. Fatal injuries are thankfully rare events. There is a degree of chance and randomness to the annual count resulting in an element of natural variation from one year's count to the next. To allow for this natural variation...
Young Worker Injury Deaths

Occupational risks, accidents on sites and economic performance of construction firms
This paper examines the relationships among site risk, accident rate and firm economic performance in construction industry. We first assess safety levels on site using a specific tool we have developed, CONSRAT. We have examined during 6 years (2004–2009) 502 construction sites of 272 Spanish companies in Mallorca. We built a panel data with these safety assessments, the firm financial performance and the accident rates. Our general hypotheses are that risk on site has an effect on accident rates and the accident rates affects firm economic performance. On one hand, we obtain a significant...
Occupational Fatalities Resulting from Falls in the Oil and Gas Extraction Industry, United States, 2005–2014
During 2003–2013, fatality rates for oil and gas extraction workers decreased for all causes of death except those associated with fall events, which increased 2% annually during 2003–2013 (1). To better understand risk factors for these events, CDC examined fatal fall events in the oil and gas extraction industry during 2005–2014 using data from case investigations conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Sixty-three fatal falls were identified, accounting for 15% of all fatal events. Among fatal falls, 33 (52%) workers fell from a height of >30...

Workplace Accidents and Workplace Safety: On Under-reporting and Temporary Jobs
Statistics on workplace accidents do not always reflect workplace safety because workers under-report for fear of job-loss if they report having had an accident. Based on an analysis of fatal and non-fatal workplace accidents and road accidents in 15 EU-countries over the period 1995–2012, we conclude that there seems to be cyclical fluctuations in reporting of non-fatal workplace accidents. Workers are less likely to report a workplace accident when unemployment is high. Furthermore, analyzing data from Italy and Spain on both workplace accidents and commuting accidents, we conclude that...
Arduous Duty
Using Three Data Sources to Create a Single Wildland Fire Fighter On-Duty Death Surveillance System Wildland fire fighters are required to pass an “arduous duty” physical fitness test annually to help ensure that they are prepared for the physical nature of the job. Unlike structural fire fighting, wildland fire fighting often requires long work shifts that may last up to 14 continuous days, and often takes place in environments that are challenging with regard to temperature and terrain. Because of this difference, researchers cannot assume that study findings among structural fire...
Work Safe Australia - Work Health and Safety in the Agriculture Industry
The agricultural industry was identified as a priority industry in the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 (the Australian Strategy), which was developed through consultation with governments, industry, unions and the public. Priority industries were based on rates of injuries, diseases or fatalities, or the nature of hazards found in the industries. The aim of the Australian Strategy is to focus attention on priority industries so that causes of workplace injuries, diseases and fatalities can be identified and minimised through appropriate prevention strategies. This statistical...
