A Review of Reviews Supporting a Cross-Disease Approach Purpose: This systematic review aimed at identifying the common psychosocial factors that facilitate or hinder the return to work (RTW) after a sick leave due to common mental disorders (CMDs), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), or cancers (CAs). Methods: We conducted a review of reviews searching 13 databases from 1994 to 2016 for peer-reviewed, quantitative, cohort studies investigating factors influencing RTW after a CMD, CVD, or CA. Then, for each disease we identified additional cohort studies published after the date of the latest review...
Background: In Western countries, work disability due to depression is a widespread problem that generates enormous costs. Objective: The goal of this study was to determine the types and prevalence of supervisor contributions during the different phases of the return-to-work (RTW) process (before and during the sick-leave absence, and during the RTW preparations) of employees diagnosed with depression. Moreover, we sought to determine which contributions actually facilitate employees' RTW, and to identify the work accommodations most frequently implemented by supervisors at the actual time...
Musculoskeletal pain can occur following damage to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones. The three main causes of musculoskeletal pain are unusual or repetitive strain on the system, trauma to a specific area from a fall, sprain or blow, and certain musculoskeletal diseases.1 Many Australians experience musculoskeletal pain, however for a few, this becomes chronic or persistent. 2 Persistent musculoskeletal pain is often associated with depression and anxiety.3 Persistent musculoskeletal pain is a major cause of disability in older age and a major cause of work absence in the working age...
Managers' abuse of subordinates is a common form of unethical behaviour in workplaces. When exposed to such abuse, employees may go absent from work. We propose two possible explanations for employee absence in response to managerial abuse: a sociological explanation based on perceptions of organizational justice and a psychological explanation based on psychological strain. Both are tested using data from a sample of 1472 mental health workers. The occurrence, duration and frequency of absence are investigated using a hurdle model. Managerial abuse is found to be associated with the occurrence...
A One-Year Follow-Up of 54 026 Employees Introduction: The diagnoses of workers being unfit to work may be a relevant health indicator. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the one-year incidence of an unfit to work diagnosis. Method: This one-year prospective study included all workers undergoing annual work medical examination from occupational health services in Troyes, France. Results: Twenty-one occupational physicians followed 54,026 employees. The all-cause incidence of being unfit to return to work was 0.772%. The two main causes of being unfit to work were musculoskeletal disorders...
Results from three Danish municipalities AIMS: Evidence for the effectiveness of return-to-work (RTW) interventions aimed at sickness absence beneficiaries with mental health problems (MHPs) is still relatively sparse and mostly inconclusive. This may in part reflect the varying settings and inconsistent implementations associated with the interventions. The aim of this paper is to identify barriers and facilitators for the implementation of a coordinated and tailored RTW-intervention implemented at three different sites. METHODS: We used qualitative and quantitative data to assess the implementation...
Depression is a major problem that affects about 300 million people globally. Symptoms of depression include the core symptoms of low mood or loss of interest coupled with other symptoms such as feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness or sleep problems. These symptoms usually impair functioning and therefore sickness absence is common in people with depression. We evaluated the effectiveness of interventions that can help depressed workers to resume work activities.
An Example Exploring Investment in Collaborative Care Objective: This article estimates the net benefit for a company incorporating a collaborative care model into its return-to-work program for workers on short-term disability related to a mental disorder. Methods: Employing a simple decision model, the net benefit and uncertainty were explored. Results: The breakeven point occurs when the average short-term disability episode is reduced by at least 7 days. In addition, 85% of the time, benefits could outweigh costs. Conclusions: Model results and sensitivity analyses indicate that organizational...
The Role of Perceived Injustice Objective: Depressive symptoms complicate patients' recovery following musculoskeletal injury. There is strong evidence to support the utility of multidisciplinary approaches for treating comorbid pain and depressive symptoms. Despite this, a significant proportion of patients may not experience meaningful reductions in depressive symptoms following intervention. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers to change in depressive symptom during multidisciplinary rehabilitation for patients with whiplash injuries. Methods: 53 patients with clinically meaningful...
Cortisol Responsiveness among Patients on Long-Term Sick Leave Objective: This study aimed to (1) See whether increased or decreased variation relate to subjective reports of common somatic and psychological symptoms for a population on long-term sick leave; and (2) See if this pattern in variation is correlated with autonomic activation and psychological appraisal. Methods: Our participants (n?=?87) were referred to a 3.5-week return-to-work rehabilitation program, and had been on paid sick leave >8 weeks due to musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and/or common mental disorders. An extensive survey...
A qualitative evaluation of a Norwegian project Objective: Several studies demonstrate the need for a unified effort by the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) and health services to support people with mental illness who wish to return to work and simultaneously receive treatment. The aim of the present qualitative evaluation study is to develop a deeper understanding of the participants' experiences of being involved in the NAV project called “Work, Substance Abuse and Mental Health”, which helps service recipients to combine work and treatment. Methods: The study...
Purpose: This paper aims to answer the question whether combining sick leave with some hours of work can help employees diagnosed with a mental disorder (MD) increase their probability of returning to work. Given the available data, this paper analyzes the impact of part-time sick leave (PTSL) on the probability of fully recovering lost work capacity for employees diagnosed with an MD. Methods: The effects of PTSL on the probability of fully recovering lost work capacity are estimated by a discrete choice one-factor model using data on a nationally representative sample extracted from the register...
Objective: To identify work ability trajectories among Finnish firefighters during a 13-year follow-up. We examined whether baseline musculoskeletal pain and depressive symptoms (DPS) predicted membership of the trajectories. Methods: We studied 411 male firefighters who responded to a questionnaire at both baseline and at least one of two follow-ups. The outcome variable was perceived work ability (0 to 10). The predictors were musculoskeletal and depressive symptoms. Covariates included age, diseases, lifestyle habits, and work-related factors. Results: One fourth of the firefighters belonged...
Purpose The Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) was designed to help capture unique characteristics of chronic pain patients. The present study examined the proportion of subgroups classified by the MPI in a chronic disabling occupational musculoskeletal disorder (CDOMD) patient cohort, and described characteristics of MPI profile groups in terms of other psychosocial variables. Methods A cohort of 1,270 CDOMD patients undergoing an interdisciplinary functional restoration program was studied. Before the start of the program, all patients received a standard psychosocial assessment battery. A...
A considerable number of workers who suffer from work-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are unable to return to work. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that impede return-to-work in workers suffering from PTSD. WorkSafeBC Vocational Rehabilitation Consultants and workers on medical leave due to work-related PTSD were surveyed. Factors identified by participants as barriers to return-to-work included: PTSD symptom severity, co-morbid conditions, negative beliefs about PTSD, and an overestimation of the likelihood that traumatic events would re-occur. The present descriptive study was aimed at evaluating posttraumatic and depressive symptoms and their cooccurrence, in a sample of victims of workplace accidents. Also, posttraumatic negative cognitions were assessed. Eighty-five injured workers were evaluated, using the PTSD Symptom Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory II, and the posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory. 49.4% of injured workers reported both depressive and posttraumatic symptoms of clinical relevance. 20% only reported posttraumatic, but not depressive, symptoms, and 30.6% did not report either type of symptoms. The group with both...
Risk of suicide has been associated with trauma and negative life events in several studies. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of suicidal ideation, and the population attributable risk among workers after occupational injuries. We investigated workers who had been hospitalized for ?3days after occupational injuries between February 1 and August 31, 2009. A self-reported questionnaire including demographic data, injury condition, and the question of suicidal ideation was sent to 4498 workers at 3months after their occupational injury. A total of 2001 workers (45.5%) completed...
A longitudinal, register-linked study Objective : The aim of this study was to examine the joint association of sleep duration and insomnia symptoms with subsequent disability retirement. Methods : Baseline survey data were collected in 2000–2002 from 40–60-year-old employees of the City of Helsinki, all working at baseline. Baseline data were linked with disability retirement data until the end of 2010, obtained from the Finnish Centre for Pensions registers (N=6042). Sleep duration and self-reported insomnia symptoms (difficulties in initiating and maintaining sleep and non-restorative...
