Ministry of Labour inspectors will focus on personal protective equipment at Ontario workplaces in the industrial and health care sectors as part of the ministry's October enforcement blitz. According to a news release by the ministry, inspectors will focus on hazards involving the choice, use and maintenance of PPE. "Workers using inappropriate or poorly maintained equipment are at risk of injury and illness," the ministry said. This document is intended to provide relevant information to employers and employees in determining whether respirators are needed, and, if so, how the respirators should be selected and used. This publication does not replace the official Respiratory Protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134). OSHA has released a revised Small Entity Compliance Guide for the Respiratory Protection Standard intended to help small businesses protect workers from respiratory hazards. The updated guide, directed at businesses with fewer than 250 workers, explains how to comply with OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard...
Employees who believe PPE is not necessary for their work or who consider it too uncomfortable to wear run the risk of leaving themselves unprotected and vulnerable to occupational injuries. According to a new survey from Kimberly-Clark Professional, this happens all too often. Source : http://ehstoday.com/ppe/news/ppe-noncompliance-serious-threat-worker-safety-0728/
Leading experts from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) contribute to this month's special issue of the peer-reviewed journal Noise and Health on state-of-the-art research on hearing protection devices. The March-April issue of Noise and Health is available online at www.noiseandhealth.org . The articles present latest findings in areas where new research is vital for addressing challenges that practitioners, employers, and workers can face in choosing and using proper hearing protection. These include: •Proper fit testing of hearing protectors. •Determining...
This report sets out the findings from a qualitative study examining respiratory protective equipment (RPE) programmes across industry. Managerial decision-making was the focal point for this research given that decisions about RPE programmes rest with management. This cross-sector, exploratory study set out to address research on: what current RPE selection and use looks like; how this compare with 'good practice' and what factors influence choice and implementation of RPE programmes.
This report presents an overview of evidence on RPE and user behaviour drawn from a number of sources, including published material; IOM reports; and the expertise and experience of IOM staff. It provides an evidence-base for factors influencing the use (or non-use) of RPE in the workplace and on how well RPE programmes are currently implemented. Although the remit was RPE, the study adopted a wider remit of personal protective equipment (PPE), on the basis that, although there will be equipment specific issues, the underlying principles influencing the use of any PPE will be essentially the same...
This report considers the effectiveness of hearing protectors in everyday work situations. The study reported here was undertaken in two parts. The first consisted of interviews with employers to discuss management of noise and hearing protector use, and on site observation of hearing protector use. The second part was objective laboratory measurements of hearing protector insertion loss. The purpose of these measurements was to quantify the reduction in protection due to poor fitting or maintenance for a range of hearing protectors. Earmuffs were tested using the MIRE (microphone in real ear)...
Several workers in a vault below a bridge could have been poisoned by carbon monoxide (CO) from gas-powered tools they were using in the confined space. The air monitoring equipment being used to check for toxic gases could not sound an alarm if CO reached dangerous levels because there was no CO sensor in the instrument. http://www2.worksafebc.com/publications/posters.asp?reportID=35408
