An Update on the State of Anti-Fog Eye and Face Protection, Technologies and Best Practices
Fog limits the effectiveness of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for eye and face protection. According to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), it is one of the three most significant barriers to their use, ahead of lack of comfort and fit and scratching. If lenses are fogged, people won’t wear them. If workers can’t see, they could have accidents. Fog forms on a surface when water vapor in air condenses in fine droplets. A good anti-fog (AF) coating should prevent the formation of such droplets, but not all AF coatings are the same. Typical AF products perform well...

Improving eye safety in citrus harvest crews through the acceptance of personal protective equipment, community-based participatory research, social marketing, and community health workers
For the last 10 years, the Partnership for Citrus Workers Health (PCWH) has been an evidence-based intervention program that promotes the adoption of protective eye safety equipment among Spanish-speaking farmworkers of Florida. At the root of this program is the systematic use of community-based preventive marketing (CBPM) and the training of community health workers (CHWs) among citrus harvester using popular education. CBPM is a model that combines the organizational system of community-based participatory research (CBPR) and the strategies of social marketing. This particular program relied...

Certifying Personal Protective Technologies
Conformity assessment is key to ensuring that the products we purchase are effective and perform to specifications; as users we are not expected to know or be engaged in the actual intricacies of how products are tested and verified to make sure that they meet performance requirements. This report focuses on conformity assessment for occupational personal protective technologies (PPT)—ensuring that PPT are effective in preventing or reducing hazardous exposures or situations that workers face in their jobs. Because respirators already have an extensive testing and conformity assessment process...
Z87.1-2010 Takes a New Approach
Now available from ISEA, the standard has been reorganized to focus on the hazards workers experience rather than the configuration of the product You'll find the new ANSI/ISEA Z87.1- 2010, American National Standard for Occupational and Educational Personal Eye and Face Protection Devices, is easier to understand and use than the 2003 edition, but don't be fooled into thinking it was a snap to finish it. "Truly I thought it was going to be easier than it actually turned out to be," said Dan Torgersen, chairman of the Z87 Committee on Eye and Face Protection and also vice president...
Liberty Mutual Research Institute for safety: Protective Eyewear in the Workplace is featured in our latest From Research to Reality newsletter
Every day, approximately 2,000 US workers sustain a work-related eye injury that requires medical treatment, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. This level has persisted for several years despite the existence of proven engineering and administrative controls for reducing eye injury exposures. The Research Institute has therefore focused its eye injury search on identifying factors that inhibit or prevent the use of effective interventions, in particular, protective eyewear...
