Source:
Improving farm safety: standards for agricultural machinery just updated
The series of standards ISO 25119, Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry – Safety-related parts of control systems, is widely used by the agricultural industry and its suppliers and has recently been updated. It sets out the general principles for the design and development of safety-related parts of control systems on tractors and self-propelled ride-on machines used in agriculture and forestry. It can even be applied to mobile equipment used in municipalities such as street-sweeping machines. The standards in the series are: · ISO 25119-1, Tractors and machinery for...
Large Machinery-Related Agricultural Injuries Across a Five-State Region in the Midwest
Objective: High agricultural injury related mortality and morbidity rates persist. This study addressed a knowledge gap regarding large machinery-related injury magnitude, consequences, and risk factors. Methods: From randomly selected Midwestern agricultural operations in 1999 and 2001, 7420 eligible households participated. Demographic, exposure, and injury data collected for four 6-month periods used a computer-assisted telephone interview. An a priori causal model enabled survey development, data analysis, and interpretation. Directed acyclic graphs, developed from this model, facilitated potential...
Occupational accidents with agricultural machinery in Austria
The number of recognized accidents with fatalities during agricultural and forestry work, despite of better technology and coordinated prevention and trainings, is still very high in Austria. The accident scenarios in which people are injured are very different on farms. The common causes of accidents in agriculture and forestry are the loss of control of machine, means of transport or handling equipment, hand-held tool, object or animal, followed by slipping, stumbling and falling, breakage, bursting, splitting, slipping, fall, collapse of material agent. In the literature, a numerous number on...
Guidance on the Safe Use of Tractors and Machinery on Farms
This guidance is intended for all those who use tractors and machinery in Irish farming. The scope includes their use on dairy, beef, sheep, equine, pig, poultry, mushroom and tillage farms, plant nurseries and vegetable producers. Source:
The National Tractor Safety Coalition
Taking a new systems-approach to a well-known problem The agriculture industry is widely recognized for its high work-related fatal injury rates, which are estimated to be 20.2 deaths per 100,000 workers (compared to 3.2 per 100,000 workers for all workers). Tractor overturns are the most frequent cause of farm fatalities, yet they can be readily addressed with the presence of a roll-bar and seatbelt (referred to as a rollover protective structure system or ROPS). Unfortunately, roughly 40% of U.S. tractors lack these protective devices. Older farmers, part-time farmers, and low-income farms are...
Reducing occupational fatalities by using NIOSH 3rd generation automatically deployable rollover protective structure
Each year tractor rollovers cause injuries or deaths for farmers despite the fact that an effective safeguard was available in the form of a rollover protective structure (ROPS); however, many ROPS were removed by the tractor's owners, because the ROPS is too tall to allow tractors to enter farm fields because it may damage produce located on low hanging tree branches while working in an orchard, and the loss of crops means loss of money for farmers. The NIOSH AutoROPS will provide the same level of protection as the conventional ROPS, but instead of having the post as one solid part as with...
Risk factors for occupational hand injuries
Relationship between agency and finger BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to define the risk factors for occupational hand injuries and explore the relationship between the machines and the fingers injured, based on the records of a hospital in Turkey specialized in hand and microsurgery. METHODS: Five thousand twenty seven occupational hand injuries treated at a hand and microsurgery hospital between 1992 and 2005 were included in the study. All the injuries were retrospectively recoded according to ICD-10, (ICECI) and ILO recommendations. Logistic regression and chi-square for trend analysis...
Research into the effectiveness of safety bar devices fitted to satellite arm bale wrapping machines-RR846
This work identified a wide range of satellite arm bale wrappers available within the UK. Testing of these wrappers indicated that, as supplied, a large proportion of these wrappers have safety bar devices that do not perform in the manner desired. This is because in many cases, following the triggering of the safety bar, the rotating dispenser arms were not brought to an abrupt enough stop. This resulted in the dispenser arms passing the point at which the safety bar had been triggered, hence introducing the possibility of the dispenser arm striking whatever/whoever had triggered the safety bar...
Source :
The Agricultural Trailer Braking Study
A study was conducted to quantify the service and parking brake performance of a small but representative range of agricultural trailers and trailed appliances in front-line service on UK farms to highlight possible inadequacies in trailer braking system specification and maintenance levels, particularly when used with faster (above 20 mph) tractors.
Agriculture power take-offs and power take-off shaft drives leaflet updated
A tractor power take-off (PTO) and the power take-off drive shaft of a machine are very dangerous if used and not correctly guarded. Every year people are killed or seriously injured in accidents involving PTOs and PTO drive shafts. Most of these accidents are preventable if the PTO and PTO drive shaft are fitted with guards of good design which are properly used and maintained.
