Risk Perceptions and Barriers to Protective Behavior Use Among Chemical Tank Cleaners
An Exploratory Study Chemical tank cleaners' occupational diseases and injuries are largely unknown due to a lack of monitoring and limited research. Their potential exposure to highly corrosive chemicals—including sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide, and ferric chloride—suggests that tank cleaners represent an at-risk occupational group. This pilot study explored tank cleaners' risk perceptions and barriers to using personal protective equipment and other protective behaviors in their workplace. Data sources included a survey (n = 29) and interviews (n ...

Keeping workers safe
Does provision of personal protective equipment match supervisor risk perceptions? BACKGROUND: Although farm management may understand agriculture's risks, they may not provide personal protective equipment (PPE). This study describes thoroughbred farm management's risk perceptions, provision of PPE, and factors that influence its provision. METHODS: Thirty-five representatives from 26 farms participated in a 1-4hr semi-structured interview covering perceived risks associated with horse work and perspectives and provision of PPE. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, entered into...
Impact of Windows and Daylight Exposure on Overall Health and Sleep Quality of Office Workers
A Case-Control Pilot Study Study Objective: This research examined the impact of daylight exposure on the health of office workers from the perspective of subjective well-being and sleep quality as well as actigraphy measures of light exposure, activity, and sleep-wake patterns. Methods: Participants (N = 49) included 27 workers working in windowless environments and 22 comparable workers in workplaces with significantly more daylight. Windowless environment is defined as one without any windows or one where workstations were far away from windows and without any exposure to daylight. Well-being...
Factors in the design of order picking systems that influence manual handling practices
Order picking can be defined as the retrieval of stock keeping units from a warehouse according to a pick list generated from a customer order prior to the despatch of the completed order to the customer. There is a variety of order picking systems that are used in warehouses and distribution centres and the choice of system will determine the amount and type of manual handling that occurs within those locations. In order to understand the factors that influence the design of order picking systems a literature review was undertaken and telephone interviews were conducted with six industry stakeholders...
Assessing the effectiveness of the Pesticides and Farmworker Health Toolkit
A curriculum for enhancing farmworkers' understanding of pesticide safety concepts Among agricultural workers, migrant and seasonal farmworkers have been recognized as a special risk population because these laborers encounter cultural challenges and linguistic barriers while attempting to maintain their safety and health within their working environments. The crop-specific Pesticides and Farmworker Health Toolkit (Toolkit) is a pesticide safety and health curriculum designed to communicate to farmworkers pesticide hazards commonly found in their working environments and to address Worker Protection...

Data on presenteeism, absenteeism, work performance, and work engagement were obtained with questionnaires at baseline, 6, and 12 months. Multilevel analyses were...
Getting better and Staying better: Assessing civility, incivility, distress, and job attitudes one year after a civility intervention.
Health care providers ( n = 1,957) in Canada participated in a project to assess an intervention to enhance workplace civility. They completed surveys before the intervention, immediately after the intervention, and one year later. Results highlighted three patterns of change over the three assessments. These data were contrasted with data from control groups, which remained constant over the study period. For workplace civility, experienced supervisor incivility, and distress, the pattern followed an Augmentation Model for the intervention groups, in which improvements continued after the end...

The Effectiveness of Joint Health and Safety Committees: A Systematic Review
For this project, the research team set out to conduct a systematic review to determine the factors that aid and impede the effective functioning of Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC), and to identify gaps in knowledge in this area. They also held a forum with experts in the field to better understand how to meet the needs of JHSC training. The researchers found that worker empowerment and involvement in the promotion of health and safety is a determinant of lower injury rates. The researchers concluded that it is key for JHSCs to have a clear mandate, and that committee members require...

Psychologically mediated effects of the physical healthcare environment on work-related outcomes of healthcare personnel
Research has demonstrated that the physical healthcare environment can affect patients' health and well-being. However, the healthcare environment affects not only patients, but also the people that work in these environments: nurses and physicians. Any changes that are made to the physical healthcare environment in order to benefit patients (e.g. renovation of hospital wards) must either benefit or have neutral impacts on healthcare professionals. A review of the effects of changes to the physical healthcare environment on healthcare professionals was undertaken. Only one study was found which...
Prevention through Design
One of the best ways to prevent and control occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities is to "design out" or minimize hazards and risks early in the design process. NIOSH is leading a national initiative called Prevention through Design (PtD) to promote this concept and highlight its importance in all business decisions. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/PtD/
