Guide to managing risks in cattle handling
This Guide provides information on how to manage risks associated with cattle handling at a workplace. Cattle handling involves any activities where workers handle cattle. This can include working with cattle in paddocks, laneways, yards, cattle transportation, feedlots, abattoirs, saleyards and activities relating to on-farm cattle sales. The Guide focusses on natural cattle handling techniques that use cattle behaviour and livestock handler position to achieve the goal rather than other techniques that ‘make' the cattle do the activity. Research to explore the effect of traditional farming Safety and Health Awareness Days (SHADs) on farmer behaviour
The research explored farmers' perceptions of the extent to which attendance at a Farming Safety and Health Awareness Day (SHAD), established by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), had changed their awareness, attitudes and behaviour in relation to health and safety. Using a mixture of quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (interview) approaches provided an opportunity to explore not only how farmers' knowledge, attitudes and behaviour had changed immediately after the SHAD, but also whether any observed changes were sustained three months after attending a SHAD. Perception of the importance of human-animal interactions on cattle flow and worker safety on Minnesota dairy farms
Proper cattle-handling techniques (stockmanship) are important to ensure calm animals and a safe work environment for dairy workers on farm. The objectives of this study were to (1) assess Minnesota dairy herd owners' attitudes toward stockmanship, its perceived importance for cow comfort and worker health, and the establishment of calm cattle movement; and (2) identify current resources and methods of stockmanship training on Minnesota dairy farms. A stratified-random sample of Minnesota dairy farmers were contacted via mail to participate in a 28-question survey. One hundred eight bovine...
Farmers' knowledge, practices and injuries associated with pesticide exposure in rural farming villages in Tanzania
BACKGROUND: Pesticides in Tanzania are extensively used for pest control in agriculture. Their usage and unsafe handling practices may potentially result in high farmer exposures and adverse health effects. The aim of this study was to describe farmers' pesticide exposure profile, knowledge about pesticide hazards, experience of previous poisoning, hazardous practices that may lead to Acute Pesticide Poisoning (APP) and the extent to which APP is reported. METHODS: The study involved 121 head- of-household respondents from Arumeru district in Arusha region. Data collection involved administration...
Ethnic and gender differences in farm tasks and safety practices among rural California farm youth
Agricultural work is hazardous and is common among rural youth, especially those living on farms or ranches. Previous work has shown differences in farm work and injury patterns between boys and girls, but little data exist addressing ethnic differences. This study examined ethnic and gender differences in farm tasks, safety attitudes, and use of protective measures among rural California youth working on farms or ranches. The University of California, Davis Youth Agricultural Injury Study is a longitudinal study focusing on agricultural work experience among youth enrolled in an agricultural sciences...
Using Social Marketing to Address Barriers and Motivators to Agricultural Safety and Health Best Practices
Social marketing is an intervention development strategy that pays considerable attention to barriers to and motivators for behavioral change or adoption of recommended behaviors. Barriers are obstacles that prevent individuals from changing or adopting behaviors and are often referred to as the “cons” or “costs” of doing something. Motivators, on the other hand, are factors that encourage individuals to change or adopt behaviors and are often referred to as the “pros,” “benefits,” or “influencing factors” of doing something. Importantly...
Influences on safe/unsafe practices
Farmers' perspectives The agriculture industry has been identified as a priority area by the HSC/E due its high rate of fatal and major injury accidents (Revitalising Health and Safety Strategy Statement, June 2000). Agriculture has the highest fatal accident rate of any other sector and this rate continues to rise, which is of particular concern in an industry where the workforce is declining year on year. The farmers most at risk are the self-employed, although as with all areas of industry small businesses are particularly hard for the HSE to target through the usual contact methods such...
Understanding and influencing farmers’ attitudes
Agriculture, of all UK industries, has the highest rate of fatal accidents. This study has examined farmers' attitudes, and the underlying influences, to identify how these might be changed to help improve safety in the industry. A literature review showed that people's perceptions of risk are influenced by social, cultural and group processes but no studies look specifically at perceptions of risk and attitudes to safety among farmers. http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr700.htm
