Handling fumigated containers in ports - health risks and prevention practices
This report reviews the potential safety and health risks arising from handling containers in ports that have been fumigated with pesticides. The authors review the legislation, identify the risks and describe practical examples of preventive measures and strategies. They conclude that there are important gaps in our knowledge. The problem is also underestimated because of poor record-keeping of adverse health effects and because fumigated containers are rarely labelled. The authors recommend prioritising control measures such as risk assessment of containers before opening, routine screening of...
Breast cancer incidence among female flight attendants
Exposure–response analyses In a cohort of 6093 female flight attendants, breast cancer incidence was not associated with cumulative exposure to cosmic radiation or two metrics of circadian rhythm disruption. Positive exposure–response relations were observed only in the small subset of the cohort with parity of three or more. Cautious interpretation of the findings in women with high parity is warranted. Pollutant exposures and health symptoms in aircrew and office workers: Is there a link?
Sensory effects in eyes and airways are common symptoms reported by aircraft crew and office workers. Neurological symptoms, such as headache, have also been reported. To assess the commonality and differences in exposures and health symptoms, a literature search of aircraft cabin and office air concentrations of non-reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ozone-initiated terpene reaction products were compiled and assessed. Data for tricresyl phosphates, in particular tri-ortho-cresyl phosphate (ToCP), were also compiled, as well as information on other risk factors such as low relative...
Miscarriage Among Flight Attendants
Background: Cosmic radiation and circadian disruption are potential reproductive hazards for flight attendants. Methods: Flight attendants from 3 US airlines in 3 cities were interviewed for pregnancy histories and lifestyle, medical, and occupational covariates. We assessed cosmic radiation and circadian disruption from company records of 2 million individual flights. Using Cox regression models, we compared respondents (1) by levels of flight exposures and (2) to teachers from the same cities, to evaluate whether these exposures were associated with miscarriage. Results: Of 2654 women interviewed...
Ventilation of vehicles used for carriage of acetylene
Following a fatality caused by an acetylene gas explosion involving a van carrying oxy-acetylene welding equipment, HSE commissioned research to investigate foreseeable gas leak rates, vehicle ventilation rates and possible vehicle modifications that would increase the ventilation rate and hence help to mitigate the explosion risk. Cancer burden of diesel exhaust steep for exposed workers
Almost five per cent of all lung cancers diagnosed in Canadian males each year are attributable to occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust (DEE). This burden was uncovered by Occupational Cancer Research Centre (OCRC) researchers as part of a wider project to estimate the current overall burden of occupational cancers suffered by Canadian workers. The OCRC released preliminary data recently estimating the proportion of new DEE-related diagnosed lung cancers to be 4.92% for males, 0.29% for females and 2.70% overall. Considering it can take years, even decades, from initial exposure to carcinogens...
Brominated flame retardant exposure of aircraft personnel
The use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in aircraft is the result of high fire safety demands. Personnel working in or with aircraft might therefore be exposed to several BFRs. Previous studies have reported PBDE exposure in flight attendants and in passengers. One other group that may be subjected to significant BFR exposure via inhalation, are the aircraft maintenance workers. Personnel exposure both during flights and maintenance of aircraft, are investigated in the present study. Several BFRs were present in air and dust sampled during both...
Modelling of liquid hydrogen spills
In the long term the key to the development of a hydrogen economy is a full infrastructure to support it, which includes means for the delivery and storage of hydrogen at the point of use, eg at hydrogen refuelling stations for vehicles. As an interim measure to allow the development of refuelling stations and rapid implementation of hydrogen distribution to them, liquid hydrogen is considered the most efficient and cost effective means for transport and storage. Psychoactive substance use by truck drivers
A systematic review The aim of this study was to summarise the scientific evidence on the prevalence of psychoactive substance use and on the factors associated with their intake among truck drivers. A systematic review was performed in the databases PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences, and Cochrane and 36 cross-sectional studies were identified with quantitative results about the use of psychoactive substances by truck drivers. Out of these, 28 were carried out in countries with large land areas and 23 obtained their information through self...
Design optimization of hazardous substance storage facilities to minimize project risk
The storage of dangerous substances is a high risk procedure: a historical analysis revealed that 17% of the major accidents associated with the chemical industry are related to this process. When a storage facility is designed, the investment in safety is not always optimal. The safety measures that are applied are sometimes redundant or ill-maintained. One way to improve safety in a storage facility would be to take advantage of the fact that dividing the mass of dangerous substance results in less catastrophic accidents. In this paper, we present a new method for optimizing the design of storage...
Review confirms cancer risk for Nfld shipyard workers
A review of shipyard work and cancer risks commissioned by the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission of Newfoundland and Labrador (WHSCC) has confirmed that the main source of excess risk for workers is asbestos exposure, with the highest level of exposures dating back to the mid-1970s. The document, “A Review of Cancer Among Shipyard Workers,” was completed by the Montreal-based Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail, a renowned scientific research organization, and made available on the WHSCC's website on...
Risk assessment for VCE scenario in an aerosol warehouse
In 2006, Dr Graham Atkinson of HSL was asked by HSE to review the risks from fires in large aerosol stores (Atkinson, 2007). Atkinson reviewed incident statistics and reports and concluded that the greatest risk to people from such fires was from explosions, not from the fire itself. He postulated a vapour cloud explosion (VCE) mechanism, whereby a fire of material elsewhere in the warehouse from the aerosols could give rise to a hot air layer close to the ceiling. Aerosols stored close to the ceiling could then fail and release their flammable contents, but not be immediately ignited by the fire...
Evaluation of Carbon Monoxide Exposure Among Airport Cargo Material Handlers
he Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) Programme evaluated airport cargo handlers' exposure to carbon monoxide. Investigators found that all airport terminal service employees' carbon monoxide levels measured in the evaluation were above recommended limits but transportation security and air logistics employees' carbon monoxide levels were not. Investigators recommended replacing fuel-driven forklifts and tugs with electric ones, reminding drivers to turn off vehicle engines when at the dock doors, increasing warehouse ventilation, and installing carbon monoxide alarms.
