Objective: To present results of a bladder cancer screening program conducted in 18 aluminum smelters in the United States from January 2000 to December 2010. Methods: Data were collected on a cohort of workers with a history of working in coal tar pitch volatile exposed areas including urine analysis for conventional cytology and ImmunoCyt/uCyt+ assay. A 5-Year Update Objective: To determine the mortality and cancer incidence of aluminum smelter workers. Method: The experience of 17,089 workers between 1950 and 2004 was studied. Results: There were 25 deaths/47 female incident cancers and 6350 deaths/3984 male incident cancers. An agreement has been signed by the Dutch Expert Committee on Occupational Safety (DECOS) of the Health Council of the Netherlands and the Nordic Expert Group for Criteria Documentation of Health Risks from Chemicals (NEG). The purpose of the agreement is to write joint scientific criteria documents, which could be used by the national regulatory authorities in both the Netherlands and in the Nordic countries. Heat stress and strain evaluation among aluminum potroom employees
HHE Program investigators evaluated hot working conditions in the potroom at an aluminum smelter. The company had a comprehensive heat stress management program, but investigators found that it was not being followed at all times. Most of the tasks that were monitored exceeded the limits for working in a hot environment and most employees who were monitored had signs of heat strain.
