Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate whether whole-body vibration (WBV) is associated with prolapsed lumbar intervertebral disc (PID) and nerve root entrapment among patients with low-back pain (LBP) undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods A consecutive series of patients referred for lumbar MRI because of LBP were compared with controls X-rayed for other reasons. Although it is not possible to conclude that high levels of WBV exposure were the only cause of the reported neck and back discomfort, vibration levels experienced by the underground mining load-haul-dump ( LHD) operators indicated health risks were likely to develop, with a higher probability of injury to the back. Back disorders are the most common form of ill health at work. The exact cause of back pain is often unclear but back pain is more common in jobs that involve driving, especially over long distances or over rough ground. Driving exposes the vehicle's occupants to whole-body vibration, that may include the shocks and jolts that are believed to increase the likelihood of injury or pain in the lower back.
